About the film Hidden in the Sand (40 minutes approx) chronicles the story of Famagusta, a city in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus that was evacuated during the 1974 invasion. Since then, a large portion of Famagusta has been encircled by barbed wire and kept under surveillance by the Turkish military, which uses the territory as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the Cyprus government. Over the last 34 years, Famagusta has become a deteriorating ghost city; its former inhabitants watch their houses decay from outside the barricades, awaiting the day when they can return. The film examines the tragic fate of this "city in captivity," while simultaneously exploring issues of loss, ethnic identity, and the ugly effects of nationalism, militarism, and propaganda in the Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot communities. To see a trailer of the film visit: www.vasiamarkides.com "As both the maker and a participant she smartly tries to stand outside the events to see the political and familiar roles being played out. The film is successful in its ability to contemporize a historical event. A tragic story told with out much sentimentality. The reality is that although they mourn the past, their lives have moved on and they eagerly await a day of reconciliation." WHEN?
